Are Hip Dips Attractive?

Are Hip Dips Attractive?

Women have taken to social media to celebrate their “hip dips” after admitting they have struggled to love these natural indentations for years. “Hip dips” are a natural feature when women have an indentation below the hips and above the thighs, and many have said they have been ashamed of them in the past.

Under the hashtag #hipdips, women on Instagram are paying tribute to the feature, also known as violin hips. Users have posted more than 1,300 posts under the hashtag, proudly showing pictures of their own “hipdips” in tight clothing to show off the feature.

Many of you may have a bulge below the hips and above the thighs. They can occur in women and are known as “violin bulge”, “thigh bulge” or most commonly “hip bulge”. The internet is so obsessed with these harmless curves that they have become the new concern of women all over the world.

Google data shows that there is a sudden increase (40%) in the search rate about hip dips. If you are worried about your dips while reading this, relax. You’ve come to the right place and we’re going to tell you why you should love your adorable dips.

If you have a slight or pronounced dip, you may have already researched how to get rid of it, and you may have tried different exercises. Most of them were lower body exercises, right? Before you start looking for another tip, hold on tight. We’d like to say a few things about your violin hollow here.

What are hip dips?

Hip dips are naturally occurring inward curvatures. They develop depending on the shape of the pelvis. This varies from person to person. Some have a distinct indentation, others do not. However, when reduced to the skeleton, we all have an indentation where the hip bone meets the top of the thigh.

The human hip is surrounded by muscles and padded with fat. The normal shape of this tissue often forms an indentation when viewed directly from the front or back. (Another term for hip dimpling is “violin hip,” if that helps you visualize it). So if you stand up straight and look in the mirror, you may notice a concave shape to your hips where you were actually hoping for a Jessica Rabbit-like bulge.  (Jessica Rabbit is, of course, a cartoon character and not bound by the limits of human anatomy. This is the first hint that hip swings are not a flaw).

There is no way to compensate hip dips with exercises.

Most articles about hip dips confirm that they are normal and common, and then they say something like, “You can’t get rid of your hip dips, but here are some exercises to minimize them.” This is 100% crap!

You can use exercises to increase a muscle, but you can’t build muscle when there is none. The only reason hip dimples exist is because there is no muscle in that spot.

Women have had hip bumps as long as humans have existed.  They are as much a part of us as elbows and knees. It’s no surprise to me because if you Google hip dimples, you’ll find tons of pages and blogs about “proven exercises for hip dimples” and bullshit “30 day” promises.

Honestly, ladies…. I don’t envy you guys. What society imposes on you, what you impose on yourselves, seems almost unbearable from a male perspective.

How to get rid of the hip dips?

Can you actually get rid of hip dips?

Without surgery, injections or fillers, the short answer is no, not really. Like I said, it largely depends on your bone structure, muscle structure, and body fat distribution. I get angry when I see people promoting surgical options, lotions, and workouts that are supposed to “fix” hip dips.

Surgery is not the answer, and while everyone has the right to do what they want with their body, I think it’s completely unnecessary. No amount of Instagram or Pintrest workouts will “fix” your hip dimples, you can’t fix them, you can’t get rid of them, at least not completely.

We can, however, change your body composition and train to make them less noticeable if they bother you so much that you want to do that (but that depends a lot on your individual genetics and has its pros and cons).

But can you make those hip dips less noticeable?

The best thing you can do is to start with regular strength training and some big weights. Fat loss will not work well for many of you, as it can increase the appearance of hip dips.  The leaner you are, the more noticeable they will be, especially if you have well-developed glutes.   This is also quite normal.

In any case, the point is to train your legs and gluteal muscles. The main muscle we want to devote more time to is….

On all of them.

Ideally, you should focus on developing all of your glute muscles, but often we recommend spending a little more time on the Glute Medius, which is also referred to on social media as the “upper glute” (which is not entirely accurate, as it is mostly below the glute max).

But always remember: many of your favorite insta fitspo ladies have them, celebs have them, models have them as well.

They’re just very good at hiding them, posing well, photo shopping them or lying about them.

That’s what makes it so refreshing when some of them actually show them and tell you it’s normal….. because they are normal (like cellulite and stretch marks).

Now is the time to practice loving yourself and stop trying to fix your “flaws”.
