Homemade peanut butter is a perfect comfort food and the good thing about making it yourself is that you can adjust how salty you want it to be as well as how sweet you will like it. Homemade peanut butter can serve as the base for your peanut butter cookies or peanut butter cheesecake.

Homemade Peanut Butter

Your homemade peanut butter will go through some stages before it becomes creamy and spreadable. From the get-go, the mixture will look impossibly crumbly and dry in your food processor but with patience, while you let your blender go a little longer, you’ll begin to notice the yummy peanut butter consistency you’re used to. You might be tempted to stop blending after 4 minutes but I’ll encourage you to let it blend for a little longer and you know the amazing outcome you’ll get? A softer and smoother consistency. This is the secret behind your creamy homemade peanut butter dream.

Things to note about Homemade Peanut Butter

Just so you are not completely discouraged with the outcome of your homemade peanut butter, you should brace up for the fact that your homemade peanut butter may never be quite as smooth or perfect as a jar of your favorite brand, say, Skippy. Homemade peanut butter will have a rougher texture than those produced commercially. To curb this, you can add a little quantity of oil, which could be peanut oil or any other natural healthy oil to help achieve a creamy consistency. Also, a powerful blender or food processor will make a lot of difference in the outcome of your homemade peanut butter.

You can also toast your nuts before blending them as this helps a lot by warming the oil in the nuts which in turn aids in blending everything together more effortlessly. Toasting your peanuts will also give the outcome of your homemade peanut butter a richer and deeper flavor.

This toasting technique can also be applied to any other type of nut you desire to blend.

  • Continue to process at high speed for 1 minute. The peanuts will start to clump together and form a mass. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl or cup.
  • Process on high speed for 1 minute. The peanuts will become smooth and look like thick peanut butter. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl or cup.
  • Add salt and process on high speed for 1 to 2 minutes. The peanut butter will be very smooth and pourable.
  • Transfer the warm homemade peanut butter to a jar or airtight container. Once the peanut butter cools, it will thicken up and be spreadable.

Store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator.

Note:

  • 1-2 tablespoons of honey or maple syrup can be added to sweeten the peanut butter. Add the sweetener when you add the salt. However, you must also add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil or coconut oil to prevent the peanut butter from seizing up and becoming tough. Add the sweetener and oil at the same time with the salt.
  • Spices like cinnamon or cocoa powder can be added with the salt to flavor the peanut butter. I found that 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon is a good starting point.
